Who this is for
Prism is a practice for adults. Sessions are cognitive behavioral therapy with exposure, practiced a step at a time.
Panic that arrives without warning
A racing heart, a tight chest, the sense that you have to leave right now. You have started planning your day around where it might happen.
Dread before being looked at
Meetings, phone calls, parties, even a short chat with a neighbor. You rehearse, replay and sometimes cancel.
Places and plans you have dropped
The highway, the grocery store, the team lunch. Small avoidances that have added up.
What this is not
I do not prescribe medication, and this is not crisis care. If you need either, I will help you find the right place.
A session, step by step
What exposure therapy looks like, session by session
This is a typical order, not a promise of how many sessions you will need. I set the pace with you, and you can slow a step down or skip it.
| Session | In the room | Between sessions | You leave with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session 1: Map the fear | In the roomWe go over what panic or social fear feels like in your body, what runs through your mind, and what you do to get through it. | Between sessionsJot down, in a line or two, when it shows up. | You leave withA map of your triggers and habits. |
| Session 2: Build the ladder | In the roomWe rank situations from easiest to hardest, in your words, and talk about what you expect to happen in each. | Between sessionsAdd to the list as you think of more. | You leave withA ladder you can see on paper. |
| Session 3: Try a first step | In the roomWe choose a low rung and do it together in the session, after agreeing what to expect and how long to stay. | Between sessionsRepeat that step once or twice before we meet. | You leave withOne exposure behind you, and notes on what happened. |
| Middle sessions: Practice and step up | In the roomWe review what you expected against what happened, then move to the next rung. Some steps happen outside the office. | Between sessionsPractice the next rung between sessions. | You leave withA short written recap each time. |
| Later sessions: Space them out | In the roomWe meet less often, plan for setbacks and decide together how to wrap up. | Between sessionsRun your own practice and bring questions. | You leave withA plan you can keep using. |
What I offer
Services
Each starts with the same question: what do you want to be able to do again?
Learn what panic is doing, then practice the sensations and places you have been steering around.
Build a ladder of the situations you dread, from a quick hello to a full presentation, and climb it one rung at a time.
Exposure and response prevention: face what sets off a ritual, and practice not doing it.

How fees work
How paying for therapy works here, in the order people tend to ask.
Insurance we work with
I am out of network, so I don't bill insurance plans directly. Many PPO plans pay back part of the fee for out-of-network visits, and I give you what you need to ask your plan. I don't bill Medicare or Medicaid.

If you pay yourself
You get your fee in writing before we meet, and it is the same for every session of the same length. A first session is 60 minutes, a usual one 50 and an extended one 80, and the fee follows the length. You pay by card at the end of each session, with no contract and nothing in advance. I hold a limited number of reduced-fee sessions, so ask when you write. HSA and FSA cards usually work. I ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session.

Receipts for reimbursement
I can send an itemized receipt each month, called a superbill, to whoever pays. It lists a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. The plan decides whether to pay you back, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
An estimate in advance
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the cost of your care before you start, and I give you one in writing in advance. If a bill comes to $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
Checking your benefits
Before the first session we go over your out-of-network benefits together, and I tell you what to ask your plan. I can't promise what a plan will pay.
Common questions
More are on the FAQ page.
Do you take my insurance?
I am out of network, so I don't bill insurance plans directly. Many PPO plans pay back part of an out-of-network fee, and I send a monthly receipt for you to submit. Your plan decides what it pays. I don't bill Medicare or Medicaid.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?

What happens in the first session?
We talk about what you want to be able to do again, I explain how exposure therapy works and what it asks of you, and we agree what to try first. You do not have to face anything in the first session.
How often, and for how long?
Sessions are 50 minutes. Many people start weekly, and I set the pace with you. I cannot promise a number of sessions.
Do I have to do things that scare me?
Practice is the heart of this therapy, and you choose each step. We start low, agree the plan in advance, and you can slow down or stop a step at any time.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. This website and my messages are not monitored around the clock.
