Therapy for OCD

For adults whose thoughts keep returning and who feel they must act on them, or check, count or avoid.

Exposure and response prevention, or ERP, is practicing what sets off the urge while choosing not to do the ritual. We go in small steps that you agree to first.

Who it helps

  • Intrusive thoughts that will not leave

  • Rituals that take time or grow

  • Reassurance-seeking, checking or avoiding

What sessions look like

  1. 01

    Step 1: Map the cycle

We write down what triggers the thought, what you do about it, and what that costs you.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Build the ladder

You rank triggers from easy to hard, and we decide which rituals to practice dropping.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Practice in session

We do a low rung together: face the trigger, and sit with the urge without acting.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Practice between sessions

You repeat the step at home, and we review what happened at the next visit.

The details

  • The method

Exposure and response prevention, a form of cognitive behavioral therapy. I explain the method, what it asks of you and what it can stir up before we start.

  • What this is not

It is not reassurance, and I will not tell you whether a thought is true. I do not prescribe medication.

  • Length and pace

Sessions are 50 minutes, and some people need longer sessions for practice. I set the pace with you and cannot promise a number of sessions.

  • How it is paid

You pay at the end of each session, or I send a monthly receipt for you to submit to your plan. Fees, receipts and the Good Faith Estimate are on the fees page.

Three questions

Will I be asked to do something I am not ready for?

No. You choose each step and can slow it down. We agree the plan in advance.

What if my thoughts are disturbing?

Intrusive thoughts are common and you do not have to say them aloud in the first session. We decide together how to work with them.

Can you work alongside my psychiatrist?

Yes, with your written permission. I do not change medication.
