Therapy for panic attacks

For adults whose body sets off an alarm when nothing is wrong, and who have started to avoid the places it happens.

We start by learning what panic is, step by step. Then we practice on purpose the sensations and the places you have been avoiding, in a plan you agree with me first.

Who it helps

  • Panic attacks that feel sudden

  • Fear of having another one

  • Avoiding driving, crowds, stores or being alone

What sessions look like

  1. 01

    Step 1: Understand the alarm

We map what happens in your body and what you do to get through it, including the habits that keep the fear going.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Practice the sensations

In the room, we bring on a safe amount of the feeling, such as a fast heartbeat, and stay with it.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Take it outside

We plan trips to the places you avoid, and you practice them between sessions.

  4. 04

Step 4: Review and step up

We compare what you feared with what happened, and move on to the next step.

The details

  • The method

Cognitive behavioral therapy with exposure, including practice of body sensations. I explain the method, what it asks of you and what it can stir up before we start.

  • What this is not

It is not crisis care, and I do not prescribe medication. A first panic attack can look like a medical problem, so if you have not seen a physician about chest pain or trouble breathing, please do.

  • Length and pace

Sessions are 50 minutes, and many people start weekly. I set the pace with you and cannot promise a number of sessions.

  • How it is paid

You pay at the end of each session, or I send a monthly receipt for you to submit to your plan. Fees, receipts and the Good Faith Estimate are on the fees page.

Three questions

Will you make me have a panic attack?

We practice the sensations of panic on purpose and at a level you agree to. You choose each step, and you can stop at any time.

What if I have chest pain?

Chest pain or trouble breathing can have medical causes. Talk to a physician, and call 911 if it is severe or you are unsure.

Can I do this by video?

Yes, if you are in Missouri when we meet. Some steps, like a trip to a store, are easiest in person.

Ready to talk about panic?

Write to me with a few general lines about what you would like to work on. I reply within two working days.
